Howdy! The 2009 Hunter Sight-in Days will be starting on October 24, 2009 and run through Nov 6th, 2009. The times and shifts are Oct 24 and 25 ALL Day with a morning shift from 9am to 1pm and an afternoon shift from 1pm till 5pm. Oct 26, 2009 through Oct 30, 2009 will be Afternoon Shifts only and run from 12pm to 5pm. Oct 31, 2009 through Nov 6th, 2009 will again be All Day with AM Shift 9pm to 1 PM and Afternoon Shift 1pm to 5pm.
The more people that call me in advance to sign up for a shift the better! The schedule fills faster and it saves a lot of calling from our end to recruit volunteers. If you want to work a shift PLEASE call me ASAP as the better slots fill fast.
There are no special skills required to volunteer. A desire to help your fellow hunters and to have a good time is all you need. There is ALWAYS someone on the line that has done it before to help out.
Sight-in days really is a great public service for our area and everyone benefits from it. Club members should remember that during sight-in days the range is closed for listed hours, but if you volunteer then you can also bring your own guns and work them into the day. If you are not comfortable working on the line, there are inside spots available too. The inside job is mainly just taking money and making coffee! Please call or email me and sign up soon!

Heads-up from the guys at TripleT-C Firearms Training. A reminder for all people interested in taking a Triple T-C pistol class. Sing up early! The dates fill fast and we do have a limit for the amount of students that we can handle. Do not expect to get into a class a week before your permit expires...PLAN AHEAD! The class certificate is good for 1 year so that gives you plenty of time! Thanks from the guys at Triple T-C!

The 4H Shooting Sports Program has become more active at Itasca Gun Club, Grand Rapids Gun Club and at Itasca Archery Club. Tuesday afternoon at the clubhouse has been set aside as a youth time for 4H and Eagle Eye youth practice sessions. If you have any questions about 4H Shooting Sports and Wildlife program please contact me. 4H is a GREAT outdoors program for kids and builds leadership skills. It's not just horses and chickens!

MN DNR Hunter Safety Courses are in high demand and we are looking for more people interested in becoming DNR certified instructors. Past instructors that would like to update their credentials are also encouraged to get in touch. Our region is going to need more Hunter safety classes in the future and this is a great way to help ensure opportunities for youth that want to get a good start into hunting.

The IGC Indoor Range has undergone some recent changes! The classroom now has running water and a bathroom, the parking lot has been improved and we are looking at working on the indoor range this winter. Bowman Well Service installed the well and the parking lot and RonEx installed septic system. Both of these contractors are IGC members and did a great job for the club. The work was on time and both jobs were at or BELOW the bid. Service after the job has been great as well. THANKS GUYS!

Camp Perry 2009 National Pistol Championships Report. It was an exciting year at the National Pistol Championships at Camp Perry, Ohio. Minnesota was well represented on the podium. Kevin Vacura of Red Wing, MN won the Harry Reeves Memorial Revolver match scoring 286 10x while Greg Abraham of Lake Crystal, MN took second with a score of 284 9x.
Greg Abraham also placed third in the Distinguished Revolver match with a score of 283 5x.
Minnesota State Team competitors were: Tom O’Donnell, Mark Vangsgard, Mike Johanns, Robert Vanderport, and Christopher Fleming. The team scored 2857 56x and placed 23rd overall.
Notably, there were two Minnesotans shooting for Team Springfield who took First Place with a score of 3340 86x in the Industry Team category. Members of Team Springfield were: George Kasat from Eagan, MN, Kevin Vacura from Red Wing, MN, Christopher Johnson and John Farley.
We wholeheartedly applaud the accomplishments of these skillful competitors and are grateful and proud to claim they are from Minnesota.
Also participating in the individual competitions were Dave Schultz and Joanne Baker who say they didn’t set or break any records, but they had a lot of fun.

A reminder for everyone that the IGC Indoor Pistol Range open shooting dates are tentatively scheduled from late November until mid March 2009. Monday evenings from 5:30 PM -7:30 PM. Mike Hughes will announce the dates for the Indoor Bullseye Pistol League after he conducts a “pre-season” meeting with Bullseye competitors to establish rules and dates.
Pistols and coffee is moving from Wednesdays to Tuesdays from 10pm to 1pm and will be starting the second Tuesday of December. For questions contact Conley Janssen. Check the schedule on the IGC website for contact information, www.itascagunclub.org.

The 2009 Itasca Gun Club Gun Show is in the books for this year. We had a few more vendors than last year, and some new ones. The turn out was good. We brought in $436.00 for our youth program, not bad when entry fee is only $ 1.00. Thanks to the people who came out to help with the show set up. A special thanks to Phyllis Anderson, Marge Kelly, and Bob Ross for their help and Larry Heise for cooking up some tasty sloppy joes. An extra thanks goes out to Conley Jannsen and his three children for their help. It's always a pleasure to work with them at any function.
The Dates for the 3rd Annual Itasca Gun Club Gun Show are set for July 24 & 25, 2010. See you next year, Joe Oliver, IGC –Vice President. (8-7-09)

Parting Thoughts, The Itasca Gun Club logo is available at Arrow Embroidery for hats and clothing and at Silvertip Graphics for stickers. A GREAT way to promote the club. NRA memberships are renewable through Itasca Gun Club and are less expensive than renewing through the NRA. In addition, renewals and new memberships benefit the club. When you’re ready to renew or sign up as a new NRA member, please contact us first!

Watch for IGC President on ICTV, Outdoors with Tom Chapin airs on Wednesday 8:00 PM on the ICTV Cable channel. Chapin interviews Jeff Sundin of the IGC and Bob LaPlant of the Grand Rapids Gun Club. The program is intended to help bring Northern Minnesota firearms enthusiasts and sport hunters up to speed on some of the shooting programs available in Grand Rapids and surrounding areas.

Gun owners and folks interested in participating in shooting sports can tune in for a look at what the area has to offer and get aquatinted with the clubs programs.
Just the facts ma’am. Everyone gets the occasional frantic email message letting you know that you’re about to be required to register your gun or pay a huge tax on ammo or maybe even have to list your guns on tax forms.
Without a doubt, there are plenty of legitimate concerns for today’s gun owner to worry about. But lets try not to make the problem worse by passing along information from bogus emails that do nothing except fuel fear on both sides of the political spectrum.
A good rule of thumb when viewing one of these so-called “heads up emails” is to run the information through one of a number of fact checking websites that exist to help separate fact from fiction. I recently received an email that contained a specific senate bill number and so I simply ran it through a couple of websites to check it out.
Urban Legends Dot Com, http://urbanlegends.about.com and Fact Check Dot Com, http://www.factcheck.org are just a couple of sites that help track down whether these rumors are truth or fiction. Another fine way to track gun legislation rumors is to run it through the NRA website. No matter your opinion of the NRA, there is no doubt that they will be on top of any “real” pending gun legislation. Get the facts before you email and save your friends the trouble. Jeff Sundin
