Hunter sight-in days 2006

The time has come again for Sight-in days! As usual we are looking for volunteers to call before we have to start going down the list. It would be fantastic to get some new people on the line. It really is a fun time and everyone learns something everyday. Being a sight-in coach is very easy and should be considered a PUBLIC safety job.

The sight in event for 2006 will begin on Saturday October 21st, 2006. We’ll look forward to seeing you there. A special note to folks, who can’t spend a lot of time on the firing line, we are always in need of people to work inside as well. If you can help sell tickets, collect money or provide support for those working on the firing line, your help is needed too! Just let us know what you’d like to do and we’ll be thrilled to have you with us.

Every time I have been a coach I have seen at least one hunter that had some safety/gun/ammo issues that were resolved on the range instead of in the field. The time you spend with sight-in days will also satisfy your membership obligations for volunteer time. Please email Conley Janssen AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

IGC Work Days Scheduled

To get the new clubhouse finished up prior to the sight in days, we’ve decided to schedule a couple of workdays. We’ll need to get a paint crew together at the range to paint the inside of the new building. The dates are October 7th for the first coat and October 14th to finish the second coat. We need to ask for help and we’d sure love to see a few of you out there. If we can swing it, we might even have a little BBQ, Fish Fry or? Call Vince Rittmiller 327-1358.

A Word about 2006 Sight in Days

THANKS AGAIN to everyone who helped with last year’s sight in event. I might be changing things a little this year. I would like to have a "pre-sight-in-days meeting" at the

range with all of the volunteers to make sure that we are all on the same page and hopefully help things run a little smoother.

There is a common misconception that sight-in volunteers need to be some kind of range expert. While there are some really knowledgeable folks in our club, many of us are just people that enjoy shooting and helping others shoot well. There are NO special skills required for you to do a great job during the event. A good attitude and a desire to help out fellow shooters and hunters are all you really need.

Raffle Tickets

As always, the raffle tickets are an important part of our annual fund raising effort. Please help out by selling the supply of tickets included with this packet and be sure to turn in tickets and cash before Friday November 3, 2006.

Soup-to-Nuts Gun Shop Closes Business

As everyone probably knows by now, Grand Rapids suffered the loss of the Soup-to-Nuts gun store to a fire this summer. The Itasca Gun Club has relied on Russ and Mary Jo for many things over the years. They have always been there for all of us and helped out in many more ways than people realize.

Russ and Mary Jo held a fire sale at the new IGC clubhouse in late August and there was a great turn out. Considering the circumstances, the sale went as well as they could have hoped and we’re glad we could offer the space to them.

For most folks, this was the first chance to see the new facility and I am happy to say that the range was left in BETTER condition that it started. I think everyone had a good time. Also a cash donation was made to IGC by CMJ Lemonade sales.

Sadly, the Itasca Gun Club has now lost one of our favorite locations for members to drop off dues, raffle tickets and other club business. We’d sure like to find another local business "sponsor" or "volunteer" to help pick up the slack. If you have any ideas, please speak up! Having a business that can act as a drop off point for various club information would really help keep things organized.

As a side note, a member called me (Conley Janssen) the other day wondering if the club could use any help doing yard work or painting? YES! Anytime someone sees something that looks like it needs to be done, either just do it or call any club officer and ask. Members can also show up at one of the monthly meetings with suggestions. Meetings are the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 7:30 PM By the way, many thanks to Jerry Lorbecki for all the MOWING time that he has fit into his busy schedule this summer.

Service Rifle Match Schedule

The service rifle match season is coming to a close, but we have two more matches scheduled. September 19, 2006 and October 17, 2006. They are always on the third Tuesday each month, all summer long. First relay is at 3:00 PM, and another relay starting at about 5:00 PM. Another benefit is the monthly meeting is at 7:30 to make a complete evening with good fun and fellowship. New shooters are welcome, and Chief high power Range Officer Phyllis Anderson will show you the ropes and get you started on a new challenging venture.

Good news, we got a fresh supply of several thousand rounds of 30-06 ammo from the DCM that is available to members at the club’s cost. For those of you that do not have a service rifle, the club always has a couple available on those range nights. Come join us for this informal and fun competition, and sharpen your shooting skills. For more information call Phyllis at 246-8742. - Stu Anderson

Camp Perry 2006 Report – Joanne Baker

Rainy weather which caused 2 evacuations from the range, one during Preliminaries and one during the .22 Team match, started the challenge at Camp Perry, Ohio for the 2006 National Pistol Championships.

Standing water, high temperatures and humidity presented conditions experienced by the shooters throughout the week.

The final results had us proud of Minnesota being represented by Kevin Vacura who won the Harry Reeves Revolver Match with a score of 279-7x, and Greg Abraham who won the Distinguished Revolver NRA Match scoring 281-10x.

Also, among the members of Team Springfield are Kevin Vacura and George Kasat of Minnesota. Team Springfield took the honors of winning the NRA Team Match with a score of 3455-137x.

Two teams were formed representing Minnesota with the following members:

     MRRA Gold                             MRRA Maroon

     Jack Vespa                              Dave Schultz

     Greg Abraham                          Joanne Baker

     Brent Larson                            Chris Fleming

     Mike Johanns                           Roger Hunt

     John Rahm                               Dennis Weestrand

Combined totals of the .22, Center Fire, and 45 matches resulted with a score of 3149-76x for the MRRA Gold team and 3171-58x for the MRRA Maroon team.

Two Minnesota Hardball teams were also formed. With Jack Vespa, Chris Fleming, Greg Abraham and Kevin Vacura shooting for MRRA Gold, the team scored an aggregate of 1044-21x. The MRRA Maroon team members Dave Schultz, Joanne Baker, Roger Hunt and Mike Johanns had an aggregate score of 803-7x.

Following this Camp Perry experience we traveled homeward with mental pictures not only of the targets we shot well but of the faces of renewed acquaintances and notes of inspiration received that have us already planning for Camp Perry 2007 – it’s 100th year anniversary.

Summer IDPA

Everyone that has wanted to shoot IDPA action pistol has my apologies for dropping the ball this summer. Actually, I had never

dropped the ball because that would imply that I had a good grip on the ball to start with! I probably never even took that particular ball out of the toy box this summer. This was pretty much the result of me losing track of time and eventually having to prioritize some things out of my schedule. In order for the club to retain it’s status of a International Defensive Pistol Assoc. sanctioned club, I personally have to remain the contact/IDPA range officer. This does not mean that I have to set up every match. Nor am I required to supervise them all year. If anyone can help out by learning more about IDPA coarse design, IDPA safety, or anything else related to this great sport, please call me and maybe we can get this sport rolling with IGC again. It is A LOT of fun and is a useful practice tool for pistol users. - Conley Janssen 327 9518

TTTC firearms training

Triple T-C is still in the firearms training business! It has been a slow summer as far as demand for classes, but it has been hectic for most everyone as far the demand for time. Hopefully after deer season we will see an increase in classes. Anyone interested in Carry permit classes or ANY other firearm class should contact Taylor Bunes or Conley Janssen

IGC Winter Bullseye, Open Pistol Indoor Range
